Davis6 Clove RoadSloatsburg, NY 10974(914) 753-2038:} Nothing can arouse my environmental ire more than watching my neighbor erect a string fence around his yard. You ma:}y speculate as to why my feathers would get so ruffled? At first, you might think I was over reacting to the defamation of t:}he natural beauty of our adjoining backyards, or maybe, you thought I was appalled at the senseless killing of the trees used:} to make the wooden stakes which support the string fence. No, what has me riled this fine morning is something far more:} hideous and irksome. For my neighbor, despite my repeated warning - string fence construction happens twice a year, once in:} the spring and once in the fall - insist on dumping several pounds of chemical fertilizer and pesticide onto his lawn. :}Obligatory signs will be posted warning people in the area to stay clear of the toxically treated yard for at least one week,:} and when I first noticed such a sign from my distant kitchen window, with its bright red letters stamped on the giant Oak tr:}ee straddling our properties, I thought my neighbor had finally decided to put an end to the occasional tresspassing of my yo:}unger family members. But alas, upon closer inspection the sign clearly spelled out a toxic warning of the most serious kind:}, and I immediately wondered about the many birds, squirrels, chipmunks, and of course children that would be unable to read :}the warning signs. Not to belittle these chemicals potential as an eye and skin irritant, it is important to mention tha:}t chemical fertilizers and pesticides are also the leading cause of groundwater contamination and toxic runoff into bodies of:} water. William K. reilly, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, recently declared that toxic runoff from lawns, :}as well as that from farms and urban centers, was the leading source of water pollution in the nation. This contaminatio:}n is known as "nonpoint pollution" by environmentalists because it does not come from a single isolated source or point. Non:}point pollution runoff from home or business lawn care is especially troubling because it is so unnecessary. According to th:}e Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), an environmental advocacy group, the average American homeowner dumps 5 to 10 pou:}nds of pesticides onto their lawns every year, for an annual total of almost 50 million tons. A greener and healthier la:}wn and garden is still possible without the use of these chemicals. A green thumb can end his or her chemical dependency by :}simply replacing man-made chemical fertilizers with lawn and garden clippings. Contrary to popular belief, grass cuttings do:} not kill the underlying lawn, but instead, if applied evenly can serve as a moisture retaining mulch and natural fertilizer.:} Grass clippings, leaves, and other lawn and garden waste should never be thrown into the garbage. Maintaining a clippi:}ngs pile in the corner of your lawn or garden where they can naturally biodegrade not only saves landfill space, but also slo:}ws the excess use of plastic nonbiodegradable bags. The NRDC estimates that 70 percent of the garbage entering America's ove:}r flowing landfills is compostable, this includes yard waste, as well as a variety of food, paper, and wood products. In a p:}ositive step for the future, several states now forbid the landfilling of leaves, brush, and grass clippings. Composting:}, the breakdown of organic materials by micro-organisms, ir easily accomplished at home, and the finished product, the compos:}t, can also be used to fertilize farms, lawns, and gardens. Composting on a large scale may soon offer a viable and cheaper :}alternative to garbage dumps which now charge as much as $100 a ton of refuse. For more information on how proper lawn m8}
